At the present time they can serve up to 250 seniors and up to 120 seniors can come in every day for services. Right now they average around 93 seniors a day that come into the facility. Since Fayette County has the second highest elderly population in the nation, they have seen their numbers increase by around seven members a month.

Senior Life's services include: physician services, nursing, therapy, medication monitoring, recreational therpay, meals and nutrition counseling, social services, home care services and even transportation. She then explained some of the duties that a hygienist performs and the importance of seeing a dental hygienist regularly. Lori recommends seeing a dentist or hygienist every three, four or six months depending on the plaque and tartar build up in your mouth. Doing so can help detect periodontal disease which begins with gingivitis. Due to the lack of proper oral hygiene and infrequent cleanings can eventually cause periodontal disease which begins as an infection in and below the gums that results in bone and tissue loss. Evidence suggests that periodontal disease may be associated with diabetes and cardiovascular diseases such as a stroke or a heart attack.

Jeff explained that the Elm Street program is a state funded program and serves as a sister program to the Main Street program that is currently happening in Uniontown. He began his role in 2008 and is currently focusing on the Gallatin Avenue community of Uniontown. One of his major challenges is changing the public perception of Gallatin Avenue. Through public events such as car shows, neighborhood cleanups, the community garden and the upcoming pumpkin festival (October 23rd) he hopes the public will see that the area is changing for the better. One initiative he is working on is building new home construction. The first three new single family homes will begin the building process this fall through Threshold Housing. A new senior center is also under construction on Gallatin Avenue. It will be an independent living facility located on the site of the American Legion building. The final initiative Jeff discussed was the Weed & Seed program. The thought behind this project is to weed out the crime and seed positive community activities. Through this state funded project the Elm Street program was able to hire an extra police officer to patrol the three neighborhoods with the highest level of crime.

Ellen Ulmer then mentioned that she was approached by officials from the downtown Uniontown area about our club decorating the Christmas tree in Storey Square. If anyone is interested in helping please contact Vic or Ellen.

Our speaker this week was Josephine Conaway from Atlantic Broadband. She discussed that Atlantic Broadband is always changing and adapting to new technology so that they can meet the customers demands. This is further evident with the digital transition that will be occurring beginning September 21st in the Uniontown area. Because the Uniontown area is bandwidth locked, Atlantic Broadband will be removing some of the analog channels from their cable television package and replacing them with new digital channels. Digital channels use less bandwidth but provide digital sound and better picture quality. It also helps Atlantic Broadband to become more competitive in the digital television market. Once complete, Atlantic Broadband will be able to offer over 60 HD channels, video on demand and faster Internet speeds. Currently they are offering customers the opportunity to try the new digital service at the current price of the value service.

The 50/50 winner this week was Julia Panos.

Wendy then asked that if any members are interested in purchasing a shirt for the Italian Festival to please contact her. Next week she will have more information on the shirts.

We were then reminded that our weekly meetings will be held at the Uniontown Holiday Inn for the next two weeks - August 18th and August 25th.

Our speaker this week was Alan Kukovich from the Power of 32. Alan started off by giving the membership some background information on the Power of 32. It was initially started over four years ago by the presidents and executives from many of the local foundations and non-profits as a way to gauge the effectiveness of their philanthropy. From there it grew into a regional visioning initiative that involves tens of thousands of individuals from across 32 counties in Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. By thinking differently about our region's challenges - our role in the global economy, our qualify of life, and our opportunities we can set a new direction for the future. By using the unified presence of a 32 county initiative Alan feels that this area can yield more influence in state capitols and in Washington, D.C.

Utilizing Community Conversations, the residents of the counties will be able to identify assets, challenges, and opportunities facing the regions we live in. Presently these conversations are being held throughout the area this summer. By the fall, the Power of 32 hopes to have had 80-100 Community Conversations. After the conversations, Framing Solutions will take place to develop policy options and to address the top challenges identified from the Community Conversations. Regional Town Meetings will then take place linking over 1,500 people together to address those challenges. From these Town Meetings, an agenda and implementation plan will be created as a framework for the next 15 years.

If you are interested in learning more, please visit the Power of 32 website.

August 4, 2010

This week there were 11 members present as well as four visitors and District Governor Walt Olshanski. President Vic Fiano began the meeting by reminding the membership he plans to donate three Penguins tickets, and a parking pass to a game at the new Consol Energy Arena for the member who brings in the most visitors or new members into the group.

Andi Palmer then spoke about our booth at the Italian Festival. That event will take place the last weekend in August and we will have the opportunity to have games of chance at our booth. The proceeds we raise will be a split between Rotary and the Italian Festival. If anyone is interested in helping staff the booth please let a board member know.

Mark Rafail then introduced District Governor Walt Olshanski to the group. Walt began by reflecting back on meeting the club members at our picnic in June. He then spoke about how things in Rotary can be accomplished bigger, better and bolder due to the spirit within all Rotarians. That idea ties into Rotary International President Ray Klinginsmith's theme of Building Communities and Bridging Continents. Some goals of Rotary International President Ray Klinginsmith for this year are: polio eradication, expanding conflict resolution, disease prevention, enabling child health care and building the community of Rotary. For these goals to be accomplished we must focus on what we as Rotarians do best.

From there Walt discussed the District 7330 theme which is Got Rotary? On a District level, Walt's main focus will be peace which begins with the continuing of the sand filter project. The District will be adopting a village in the Dominican Republic as a main focal point. In terms of literacy, the dictionary project will also continue. Walt asked that we see if the students or even children of Rotary members can design posters focusing on what Rotary means to them. The posters can then be displayed during District Conference. Another issue Walt will focus on is membership. His goal for the year is to have 100 net new members for the District. While Rotary International specifies that each district have 1,200 members our district currently has 1,215. Therefore growth is needed on this part. Leadership is also a focus for Walt during his term - RLI training will continue to build the depth chart for leadership within the individual clubs. His goal for Foundation giving for the district this year is $200,000. While that number may seem high he feels that is everyone puts forth a great effort it can be accomplished.

Vic closed the meeting by announcing to the membership that marshals are needed for the 14th hole for the Mylan Classic. If you are interested, please download the form. Christie Schnelbach and Lauren Palmer both sent thank you notes for our most recent donation to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

By visiting those communities, plans for the County such as jobs and infrastructure have been discussed. The main focus has been, "What Do You Want to See Happen in Fayette County in Ten Years?". The response has been an increase in recreation projects and a focus on crime in the County. Their newly created website, Fayette Forward, has a vision statement and project ideas in draft form. Communities and committees will see those ideas and visions through without FayPenn's involvement. This initiative is supported by the Fayette County Commissioners, the local chamber of commerce's, and the city of Connellsville.

The Caring Mission was started in 2000 in Washington County and serves a non-medical home health care need. TCM on the other hand was started in 2008 and serves the medical side of the practice. Services offered by TCM are ordered by a doctor and are used for individuals with chronic conditions such as those who are homebound. Although the services need to be ordered by a medical professional, Federal law allows for the individual to choose their service provider. The services offered by TCM are covered by your insurance but Caring Mission services are usually covered by the VA, Area on Aging or as an out of pocket expense. The Fayette County office is located on Pittsburgh Street in Uniontown.

Our speaker this week was Kelly Loomis from Highlands Hospital in Connellsville. She did a presentation on a new program that is being developed called Combat Stress Intervention. This program is meant to recognize the symptoms veterans coming back from Iraq and Afghanistan are experiencing and how to respond to those issues. Since the events of 9-11 there have been 14,000 veterans from the state of Pennsylvania with over half of them seeing dead bodies or being shot at in combat. Because the soldiers have been taught to act then think it has been difficult for those to adjust when returning home when they are now forced to think first and then act. This can lead to difficulty controlling their emotions, relationship issues, issues of trust, constant questioning, losing the ability to focus on completing tasks and long term intimacy issues once they return home. Kelly mentioned that these issues are usually not present for about six to nine months and that those who seek help for these issues have better results than those who do not seek out help. She recommended that the first steps a veteran should take would be to seek help at either a primary care physician or the Veteran's Affair Center in Pittsburgh.

For Bill, it was a dream come true to participate in the event however what led him to this event made for a very interesting story. There are 27 qualifying events and roughly 50,000 participants around the world which produce the qualifying spots for this competition. Unfortunately, Bill did not qualify however he was able to participate through a lottery process and was notified in April 2009 of his selection. He then started training 15-20 hours a week doing exercises in biking, swimming and running. When he arrived in Hawaii in October 2009 to compete in the event, his main goal was to finish the event which begins at dawn and ends at midnight. Competing with 1,700-1,800 other individuals, Bill explained some of the difficulties he faced during the event such as the heat (100° temperatures) and dealing with food packets. In the end, Bill was able to finish the event - it took him roughly an hour and seven minutes for the swimming portion, six hours and fifteen minutes for the biking and five hours and fifteen minutes for the running portion of the competition. Our speaker this week was Virginia Rockwell from the U.S. Census Bureau. She provided all members a packet with information on the upcoming census. One of her main focus points this morning was the fact that the U.S. Census is hiring for the 34 census tracks in Fayette County. The hours are flexible and a great opportunity for many seeking employment in the area. The main position they are looking to fill is the enumerator. That position has a pay of $15 an hour with a .55 cent mileage reimbursement. While all are encouraged to take the test and apply she thinks this may be a great opportunity for high school seniors to make some additional money for college during the summer months. The goal is to hire enough individuals so the response rate increases from the 60% that was recorded in 2000. For every one person that they do not record, local communities lose $1,000 a year. Over a course of the census period that figure can eclipse $10,000. For more information on applying visit the U.S. Census Recruiting website.

This new philosophy for police officers has led him to encourage business owners to set up emergency plans in case of a shooting or other incident. He also recommended to be observant of your surroundings. This is especially important during the holiday season. Jason recommended to the group that making eye contact with suspicious individuals generally deters an attack.
